Food for People and the Planet

The original owners, Kevin and Donna Maltz, are back, and we promise 2014 will be the best year ever, featuring some delicious new menu items and a fresh juice bar. At The Fresh Sourdough Express we have been proudly serving local and organic food to the Homer community and travelers from around the globe since its inception. Each year we continue to expand on our commitment as the changing food industry shifts. We are now able to source more humanely raised meats and with the movement towards a more sustainable community we are blessed in Homer to have numerous new organic farms, including high tunnel green houses, that enable us to offer more local & organic ingredients than ever before, and for an extended period of time. The friendly ambiance of this establishment is reflected by the core values of sustainability that we share through our business practices. Since the creation of this delicious, growing concept, we have embraced the model of running a socially and ecologically responsible establishment. We seriously strive to run a Zero Waste operation by incorporating the principles of recycling, waste management, energy saving solutions, water-saving systems, and biodegradable packaging.  We believe that by purchasing from local growers and producers we will bring you a better product to the table while reducing the overall carbon footprint and increasing the health of the local economy, you as our customer, and the planet.

We offer you our popular breakfast items all day along with hearty lunches, seasonal daily specials, to-go meals, box lunches, daily baked goodies including gluten-free options, smoothies, espresso drinks, milkshakes & fresh juices all in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Our catering services are planed with attention to detail for any event. We feature the best Alaskan seafood, local beef and plenty of Vegetarian & Vegan options using as much seasonal Homer-grown produce as possible. We also offer you the finest espresso, milk shakes, smoothies and a fresh juice bar.

Our  emphasis has always been on impeccable service, fantastic fresh food, and a clean and comfortable atmosphere.

Eating is an environmental and ecological act that shapes our economy

We are elated to see that more eateries everywhere are also striving to run their business with a more wholesome picture and understanding of the impact that restaurants can have on the environment, the people, and the local economy. Buying from local farmers and producers helps to build the local economy and assures freshness in all that we prepare.

We’ll be camping on the lawn until we’ve tried the entire menu

OH.MY.GOSH. I don’t know where to start…. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with happy smiley faces and chilled out funky music. We started with coffee and it was an AWESOME brew and they even gave us free samples of their baked goods while we waited for our food. We ordered the St. Augestine, the smoked salmon scramble, & cinimon french toast. It was all insanely tastey and blew our minds! The French toast is the best weve ever had! Portions were big, I tried to finish mine because it flippin good, but was stuffed!

Our waitress Ala was so nice and helpful! We loved it so much we bought the bread to make our own french toast! We’ll be coming back next time were in Homer! Such a gem and awesome to know their progressive in Eco friendly practices and support local organic products!! Yum yum yum!!

Fabulous breakfast, atmosphere, and service

Long story short, every aspect of the meal was superb. More than you can eat and excellent tasting to boot…. I don’t know much about Homer, but I now know where to get a good breakfast!

Prices were more than fair. I would return in a heartbeat…. Somehow you know in your gut when you’ve found a place worth returning to time and time again.

Perfect start on a wet Sunday

When we arrived about 9.30 Sunday morning we were seated immediately and thought things were pretty quiet. Within fifteen minutes the place was packed, and when our food arrived we could see why it’s so popular. Delicious pancakes for the whole family, and our first experience of biscuit and gravy. Yum! Our first ‘real’ American breakfast and we loved it.

Never fails to satisfy

The Sourdough Express is one of the “must dos” for any Homer vacation. Do the 1/2 day Halibut trip and then go to the Sourdough for brunch. The food is hearty – I’d call it traditional Alaskan stick to your ribs with an environmental/green veggie ethic thrown in. Baked goods are great.
